About our piano lessons at A Piano Grows In Brooklyn
ABOUT THE LESSONS
Where are lessons held?
We teach lessons at our Downtown Brooklyn studio (190 Duffield Street) and in students’ homes across Brooklyn. We offer remote lessons, as well. Our goal is to make piano study accessible to every student, wherever they feel most comfortable.
Who are your piano teachers?
Our team of seven experienced teachers are active professional musicians who perform and compose throughout New York City. Read their full biographies and see photos on our Teachers page.
Do you teach adults as well as children?
Yes! We teach students of all ages, from kids to teens to adults. Some of our adult students start from scratch or return to piano after years away. Others have years of experience and want to grow in a new direction. We tailor each lesson plan to the student’s goals, experience level, and preferred style of music.
Do I need previous experience?
No. Many of our students begin with no musical background at all.
What styles of music can I learn?
Our students study classical, jazz, pop, and contemporary music. One element that we find to be crucial is that the student is working toward music that they are excited about. This is why we welcome music from anywhere, whether sheet music exists or whether we have to create our own chord charts. From video game themes to music from obscure YouTube and TikTok videos, nothing is out of bounds. We consistently observe that our students put way more work into learning their favorite song rather than Row, Row, Row Your Boat. On the other hand, we’re happy to teach you Row, Row, Row Your Boat! Whether you want to read sheet music, play by ear, or write your own songs, we’ll create a lesson curriculum that centers around your interests.
What happens during the first lesson?
Your first lesson is an opportunity for your teacher to get to know you. We'll discuss your musical interests, evaluate your experience level, and begin working on music that's appropriate for your goals. You'll leave with a clear sense of what to practice before your next lesson.
SCHEDULING
How often do lessons take place?
Most students take lessons once per week, though we can arrange more frequent sessions for advanced students or those preparing for performances.
How long are the lessons?
Lessons are available in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute sessions. Shorter lessons are great for beginners and younger students; longer lessons allow time for advanced repertoire, theory, or songwriting. We’ll also note that sometimes siblings combine their lessons into a block that goes beyond 60 minutes.
PRACTICAL MATTERS
How much do lessons cost?
Our lesson rates are comparable to other professional studios in Brooklyn, with flexible lesson lengths to suit different goals and budgets. Private lesson prices start at:
$60 per half hour
$75 per 45 minutes
$90 per hour
Write us to discuss all our options.
Is there an age minimum?
Our current teachers specialize in students ages 5 and up. If your child is younger than 5, we recommend working with a teacher who focuses specifically on early childhood piano instruction.
What equipment do I need at home?
It’s essential that you are able to practice in between lessons in order to make satisfying progress. Students need to have some kind of piano or digital keyboard at home, even if the model is small and inexpensive.
Can you help me choose a piano or keyboard?
Yes. If you haven't purchased an instrument yet, we're happy to recommend digital pianos and keyboards at a variety of price points. There's no need to buy an expensive instrument before getting started.
How do payments work?
We operate on a flexible month-to-month basis with no long-term contracts. Tuition can be paid via Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, or Apple Cash.
What’s your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations.
Lessons canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged in full to respect our teachers’ time.
Can I switch teachers?
Definitely. Every teacher has a different personality and teaching style. If another instructor seems like a better fit, we're happy to help make the transition.
BEYOND THE LESSON
Do you host student recitals or performances?
Yes! We host biannual piano recitals in Brooklyn where our students can perform for family and friends. We currently host separate recitals for young students and adult students. Participation is always optional.
Can I take lessons if I don’t live in New York?
Absolutely. We offer remote piano lessons via Zoom for students across the U.S. and internationally. The same creative, personalized approach applies whether lessons are online or in person.
