About our piano lessons at A Piano Grows In Brooklyn
1. Where are lessons held?
We teach lessons at our Downtown Brooklyn studio (190 Duffield Street) and in students’ homes across Brooklyn. We offer remote lessons, as well. Our goal is to make piano study accessible to every student, wherever they feel most comfortable.
2. Who are your piano teachers?
Our team of six experienced teachers are active professional musicians and composers performing throughout New York City. You can read full bios and see photos on our Lessons page.
3. Do you teach adults as well as children?
Yes! We teach students of all ages, from kids to teens to adults. Some of our adult students start from scratch or return to piano after years away. Others have years of experience and want to grow in a new direction. We tailor each lesson plan to the student’s goals, experience level, and preferred style of music.
4. What styles of music can I learn?
Our students study classical, jazz, pop, and contemporary music. One element that we find to be crucial is that the student is working toward music that they are excited about. This is why we welcome music from anywhere, whether sheet music exists or whether we have to create our own chord charts. From video game themes to music from obscure YouTube and TikTok videos, nothing is out of bounds. We consistently observe that our students put way more work into learning their favorite song rather than Row, Row, Row Your Boat. On the other hand, we’re happy to teach you Row, Row, Row Your Boat! Whether you want to read sheet music, play by ear, or write your own songs, we’ll create a lesson curriculum that centers around your interests.
5. How often do lessons take place?
Most students take lessons once per week, though we can arrange more frequent sessions for advanced students or those preparing for performances.
6. How long are the lessons?
Lessons are available in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute sessions.
Shorter lessons are great for beginners and younger students; longer lessons allow time for advanced repertoire, theory, or songwriting. We’ll also note that sometimes siblings combine their lessons into a block that goes beyond 60 minutes.
7. How much do lessons cost?
Our lesson rates are comparable to other professional studios in Brooklyn, with flexible lesson lengths to suit different goals and budgets. Private lesson prices start at $60 per session. Write us to discuss all our options.
8. Is there an age minimum?
Our current staff does better teaching kids. At this time, our age minimum is 7 years old. If you have a student that is younger than 7, we definitely encourage you to find a teacher that specializes in that younger age range.
9. What equipment do I need at home?
It’s essential that you are able to practice in between lessons in order to make satisfying progress. Students need to have some kind of piano or digital keyboard at home, even if the model is small and inexpensive.
10. How do payments work?
We accept payments via Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, and Apple Cash.
We operate on a flexible, month-to-month basis — no contracts required.
11. What’s your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations.
Lessons canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged in full to respect our teachers’ time.
12. Do you host student recitals or performances?
Yes! We host biannual piano recitals in Brooklyn where our young students can perform for family and friends. Participation is optional but highly encouraged — our students often find it inspiring and rewarding. In 2025 we held our first adult student recital. We’re hoping to hold more of those, as well.
13. Can I take lessons if I don’t live in New York?
Absolutely. We offer remote piano lessons via Zoom for students across the U.S. and internationally. The same creative, personalized approach applies whether lessons are online or in person.
